The Oregon Yacht Club [OYC], an historic floating home moorage in Portland established in 1898, is certified as an Oregon Clean Marina [OCM]. Sponsored by the Oregon State Marine Board, the OCM is a voluntary state program with a goal to help protect and improve local water quality by promoting the usage of environmentally responsible practices at marinas [including floating home moorages]. Certified as an OCM means that the Oregon Yacht Club receives state recognition for its dedication in implementing practices at its site that support a cleaner marine environment for Oregon.
Additional advantages of being a designated Oregon Clean Marina are many:
- Ensures that there is in place an emergency response plan for potential accidents or emergencies;
- Informs shareholders “about pollution prevention boating practices and aquatic nuisance species” through the distribution of the pamphlet “A Clean Boater’s Guide”;
- Demonstrates that OYC is a good steward of the environment with the posting of aquatic nuisance species and oil spill signage, as well as having on hand an oil-spill kit;
- Ensures that OYC’s Bylaws include a focus on preventing adverse impacts to the environment;
- Educates residents, encouraging them to use more environmentally sound and aesthetically pleasing practices in taking care of their own structures as well as moorage properties;
- Encourages public awareness of OYC’s contribution to the preservation and enhancement of the environment and thus to its neighborhood, community and state by means of the following:
- the display on site of the Oregon Clean Marina plaque and OCM flag;
- use of OCM’s logo on the Oregon Yacht Club website and on publicity releases;
- recognition in the Oregon Clean Marina News publication.
- Discounts on moorage and floating home insurance through certain companies.
